My most recent personal design project, I have been manufacturing a motorized German Christmas Pyramid using SolidWorks and applied knowledge from previous electronics classes.
1 - Design
Based on traditional German Christmas Pyramids, the design is utilizing 3-D print PLA filament, meaning the traditional means of using candle flames to spin the design would not be sufficient.
This required designing a system to control the central shaft from the bottom with a motor, an on/off switch, and battery.
2 - Analysis
The design has a central shaft and planetary gear train for hand-made clay pieces on each platform to slowly revolve.
This required the central shaft and gears be meticulously planned out before 3-D printing the final design in order to reduce friction in the planetary gear train.
3 - Manufacturing
The design was 3-D printed, affixed with wood filler, sanded, primed, spray-painted, and will be painted with alcoholic ink to give a wood-finish look.
Following the installation of the electronics, the design will be finished with plastic floral elements; the electronic integration is the next step this project is on.
