- Project Overview -
For my summer internship, I was tasked with solving an issue with a new belt-driven system and the subsequent motor integration.
Inside Amazon's Fulfillment Centers across the country, pre-ship lines have utilized, up until recently, chain-driven pulleys. In order to save on cost and wear, they were switched to belt-driven pulleys, however the motor mounts were not updated to accommodate.
My job was to design a motor-mount that could easily adjust tension without taking the entire system apart, which was what currently had to be done.
As a prototype and potentially cost-saving measure in the future, I decided on ordering already made motor-mounts and adjusting the rail size within the on-site workshop to fit the current dimensions of the motor box.
With the help of on-site technicians, the existing motor was installed onto the adjusted motor-mount and the motor box was accordingly modified, with each step to do so written down within a report to replicate the installation on future motors.
This report was then published to my manager and is being updated and utilized throughout Amazon Fuflillment Centers in the country.
Following the installation, the motor performance was checked every day, with results of pulley-adjustment times decreasing substantially from 1-2 hours to less than 15 minutes.
